Line-profile variations of non-radial adiabatic pulsations of rotating stars III. On the alleged misidentification of tesseral modes
نویسنده
چکیده
We use a model of a non-radially, adiabatically pulsating rotating star to generate time series of absorption line profiles. We analyse the spectral time series of a tesseral mode with pulsation parameters `=2 andm=−1, to obtain amplitude and phase diagrams as a function of position in the line profile. We investigate whether the phase diagrams can be used to identify the pulsation parameters ` and |m| of this mode. As opposed to the findings of Reid & Aerts (1993), we find that the effects of the Coriolis force do not hinder the identification of the degree ` of the pulsation mode, but that the exact value of i=90◦ that they used does. We show that for an inclination angle just slightly different from 90◦ the chances for an erroneous identification of the degree ` of the `=2,m=−1 pulsation mode, by means of a spectroscopical phase diagram, are very small. We also discuss the interpretation of observed line-profile variations in the Be star η Cen, where a tesseral mode with `=7 andm=|6| might be present.

متن کاملThe Discovery of Non-radial Gravity-mode Pulsations in Γ Doradus-type Stars
Over two dozen early F-type variable stars have been identified which constitute a new class of pulsating stars. These stars typically have periods between 0.5 and 3 days with V -band variability of several hundredths of a magnitude. Given the time scale of the variability, the pulsations would have to be non-radial gravity-mode pulsations. The pulsational nature of some of these stars has been...
متن کاملAvoided crossings in radial pulsations of neutron and strange stars
Radial pulsations of neutron stars and strange quark stars with nuclear crust are studied. The avoided crossing phenomenon occurring for the radial modes is found and discussed. Neutron star models are constructed using a realistic equation of state of dense matter and strange star models using a phenomenological bag model of quark matter. The eigenfrequencies of the three lowest modes of linea...
متن کاملPulsations detected in the line profile variations of red giants Modelling of line moments , line bisector and line shape
Context. So far, red giant oscillations have been studied from radial velocity and/or light curve variations, which reveal frequencies of the oscillation modes. To characterise radial and non-radial oscillations, line profile variations are a valuable diagnostic. Here we present for the first time a line profile analysis of pulsating red giants, taking into account the small line profile variat...

AB S TRACT A global analysis of the surface trapping of low-frequency non-radial g modes in rotating early-type stars is undertaken within the Cowling, adiabatic and traditional approximations. The dimensionless pulsation equations governing these modes are reviewed, and the boundary conditions necessary for solution of the equations are considered; in particular, an outer mechanical boundary c...
